One of the many eye-catching small businesses in Mountain View downtown is its barbershop, Dandies, located on the east side of Castro Street in the rear of the alleyway between Rumble Fish and Sakoon. I go to length to describe the location because it is indeed inconspicuous. The barbers are young, but talented. They provide full service men's beard and men's hair styling, including authentic straight razor blade shave. The service is careful and unhurried it is probably best for clients to adopt a corresponding mindset of ease and leisure at this locale. Not surprisingly, Dandies has been open late for business some nights at random, providing men's haircuts and shaves. It is during my own daily scrambles to and from my car in the rear parking lot when I observe these peculiarities of the barbershop! The atmosphere is welcoming and the barbers are hospitable. Complimentary drinks, coffee, edibles, snacks, alcoholic beverages, and cigars abound here. Even the occasional improvised BBQ party --flush to the outdoor side of Dandies' own wall --has not escaped my notice. As of Spring 2021, the barbershop has become quite bustling with clients, many of whom are probably emerging from the pandemic lockdown with long-neglected beards and mustaches! First-time clients should expect an atmosphere rife with masculinity, and reminiscent of men's old-fashioned barbershops. However, I have recently observed at least one female barber providing haircuts and shaves at Dandies. This likely will help to bring a much-needed woman's touch!
